Health care to seafaring and civil aviation flight crews, and to their entitled relatives, is provided in Italy by the Local Health Authorities (now called ASL) of the territories in which the people concerned are domiciled, or where they temporarily live if they are non-resident foreigners or stateless persons.
The Ministry of Health, however, ensures health care in Italy and abroad:
This health care covers the entire period of the illness contracted in the above situations.
Seafaring and civil aviation flight crews are also ensured medical-legal services.
To profit from these services travelling personnel should belong to one of the categories described in art. 2 of the Presidential Decree 620/80.
Health care in Italy is provided to entitled people belonging to these categories through health centres depending on the Directorate General for Human Resources and Health Professions of this Ministry, located close to ports or airports.
These divisions are called SASN - Health Care Services to Seafaring and Flight Personnel. The above-mentioned outpatient clinics include both general practitioners and specialists operating within the national health service, non-medical health staff and administrative personnel. The services are supplied, both directly and indirectly, and range from general and specialized medicine to pharmaceutical assistance. In those areas without SASN outpatient clinics, people entitled to healthcare are assisted by doctors who have an agreement with the Ministry of Health and whose names and addresses can be requested from the above mentioned SASN-Genoa and SASN-Naples Offices whose competence it is to assist seafaring and flight personnel, in Northern and Central Italy and in Southern Italy and the Islands respectively.
To profit from these services a specific application form should be forwarded to the Ministry of Health, either directly or through the shipping company one belongs to.
